  • She was invited to a lunch in London scheduled for October 12th. However, due to Covid-19 restrictions, the lunch was replaced with a virtual event on November 10th.

Dr. Widad Akreyi Honoured as Woman of the Year 2020

LondonNovember 10, 2020 Dr. Widad Akreyi has been distinguished as Woman of the Year 2020, recognising her exceptional achievements and her role as an inspirational international figure. This honour is a testament to her unwavering commitment to social justice and her profound impact on communities worldwide.

Dr. Akreyi is celebrated as a dynamic global icon of courage, known for her strong personality, high sense of duty, and compassionate heart. Throughout her distinguished service, she has tirelessly advocated against gender-based violence, the illicit arms trade, and the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war. Her remarkable work has earned her numerous accolades, including the esteemed Pacem in Terris Peace and Freedom Award, the International Woman Harmony Award, the Davenport Mayor Medal and the International Pfeffer Peace Award, along with the Prize for bridging the gap between cultures.

The Women of the Year initiative aims to highlight and celebrate extraordinary women from around the globe. In February 2020, Catherine Roe, Chair of Women of the Year, extended an invitation to Dr. Akreyi to attend a celebratory lunch, stating, "To be invited is, in itself, an accolade. As someone who has been such an inspiration to others, we really do hope that you will be able to attend." Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, which necessitated a shift from a live event to a virtual format, Dr. Akreyi participated in the event hosted on November 10th.

As an accomplished epidemiologist and author, Dr. Widad Akreyi has emerged as a beacon of hope and the moral voice for those who are often voiceless. Her advocacy for peace and human rights transcends geographical boundaries, inspiring individuals not only in her native Kurdistan (and the Middle East) but also across the globe. Among her notable publications are The Daughter of Kurdland: A Life Dedicated to Humankind, Zoroastrians' Fight for Survival, and Females of Valor, which reflect her dedication to addressing the complexities of human experience.
